Robinson's Lecture

Robinson's lecture about creativity was very interesting. "Education is meant to take us into the future we can't grasp" (Robinson). He claims that creativity is needed for original ideas, in the unpredictable future. "Creativity is as important as literacy. And we should treat them with the same status" (Robinson). Children are very creative at a young age and for that, they are not afraid of being wrong. "I don't mean to say that being wrong is the same thing as being creative. If you are not prepared to be wrong, you will never come up with anything original" (Robinson). However, when they grow up and go through the educational system, they are taught that mistakes are something that should not be encouraged. Through this system, children grow up being afraid of making mistakes and being wrong. As a result, children growing up are stripped of their creativity. Thinking about the second paper, I ask myself, "what makes a good teacher?" Creativity is needed for teachers to respond to the student's needs. Not only do they have to be nice and encouraging, but they need to be creative and inventive. "And the teachers would have needed some inventiveness, for none of us was groomed for the classroom" (Rose - 2). What happens when a teacher does not have creativity as part of their profession? What happens when a teacher does have creativity? How will these two teachers compare? How different will the students absorb their teachings? If creativity is what the future needs, is there time to change the educational system? If creativity has already been stripped off the teachers today, how will they avoid doing the same thing to their students in the future?
