What are the roles Boyce and Large advocate?

In the two articles, Jerry Large and Barry Boyce both emphasize the importance of being emotionally supportive of children's thoughts and feelings. Parents being sensitive to children's feelings helps build character and, in turn, these children become successful in the future. The role both writers advocate is the role of supporter. Jerry Large mentions, "If more parents hug and kiss and coo in those first years, we'd have a lot more happy and successful children" (Large - 2). He believes that if parents hug their children and kiss their wounds up to a certain point, the children can develop grit. Grit is one characteristics in successful people. Barry Boyce believes that children that receive "optimal nurturing conditions" will develop social and emotional skills needed in life. Boyce quotes Mark Greenberg in this article, “Kindness, caring, empathy, being able to de-center from your own point of view and listen deeply to others—these are values that should be cultivated in our classrooms" (Boyce -). Parents and teachers must take on the role of supporter to promote positive qualities like empathy and strong friendships. Both articles strongly emphasize the importance of the supporter in children's lives. With this role, children can learn in a supportive, stress-free environment and become successful.
